WRC 2025: Sebastien Ogier Wins Record-Tying 9th Title! | Rally Saudi Arabia Recap (2025)

The World Rally Championship (WRC) has witnessed a thrilling conclusion, leaving fans on the edge of their seats! Sebastien Ogier has claimed his ninth WRC title, matching the legendary Sebastien Loeb's record. But it came at the expense of Elfyn Evans' hopes for his maiden championship, after a dramatic Rally Saudi Arabia.

Despite Evans' impressive performance this season, he falls just short once again, becoming a five-time runner-up. Ogier's third-place finish in Jeddah, coupled with nine bonus points, secured his victory, leaving Evans four points behind at the end of the 14-race season.

"It was a challenging event," admitted Evans, who took sixth place in Saudi Arabia but won the final stage, earning him nine bonus points. "We gave it our all, but in the end, we fell short." Ogier, 41, paid tribute to his competitors, stating, "It's been an intense battle with Elfyn and Scott. Great champions are forged against great opponents."

Controversially, the Saudi Arabia rally, a new addition for 2025, has been criticized by many drivers, including Ogier and Evans, who called it "a lottery." The penultimate stage saw several leaders encounter difficulties, with punctures and soft sand causing a major shake-up in the standings.

This allowed Thierry Neuville to claim his first rally win of the season, and Ogier to gain a crucial advantage over Evans in the championship race. The Welshman trailed the Frenchman throughout the rally, but the virtual leaderboard kept the competition tight until stage 16.

Evans has now finished second to Ogier three times, including a heartbreaking loss in 2020 when a crash on snow-covered roads dashed his title hopes. He has also been runner-up to Neuville and Rovanpera in recent years, leaving him eager to become the third British WRC winner.

In other notable results, Ireland's Josh McErlean finished ninth in Saudi Arabia, securing 11th place overall in his first full-time WRC season. England's Gus Greensmith took the WRC2 honors, finishing fourth behind Oliver Solberg, who will drive a Toyota Rally1 car next season.

And here's the controversial part: Should the WRC reconsider the inclusion of the Saudi Arabia rally, given the criticism and treacherous conditions? Is it fair to drivers and teams to have such a decisive event in the championship? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
