There’s a significant concern brewing for nearly 3,000 electric vehicle owners in Australia: they are being advised to refrain from fully charging their cars due to a critical fire hazard associated with a specific battery issue. This warning has prompted the federal transport department to issue a recall notice aimed at Volvo EX30 electric vehicles that were sold in Australia throughout 2024, impacting around 2,815 drivers.
The core of the problem lies in a flaw identified within the batteries of these compact SUVs, which has been highlighted in the recall notice as potentially leading to a fire incident. The notice explicitly states, "Due to a manufacturing issue, the cell modules installed in the high voltage battery may overheat at high charge levels."
While Volvo is actively working on a solution, the automaker reassures affected drivers that they can continue using their vehicles, provided they do not charge their batteries to full capacity. Specifically, the recall advises, "Until a remedy is made available, owners should keep the battery charge level below 70%."
Once a fix is developed, Volvo will reach out to the owners of the impacted vehicles to arrange for the necessary repairs, which will be performed at no cost to them. For convenience, motorists have the option to set a maximum charging level for their car’s battery through the vehicle's on-screen menu, which can help manage the charging process effectively.
Volvo's cautionary measures are not limited to Australia; they have also alerted drivers in other countries about the same battery defect since late December and early January, and a recall notice has been similarly issued in South Africa. In the United Kingdom, the company has clarified that not all EX30 models are affected by this battery issue and that, as of now, there have been no serious injuries reported.
In a statement regarding safety, Volvo emphasized, "Safety is a top priority for Volvo Cars, and while the number of reported incidents is very small, representing around 0.02% of the cars we have identified as potentially affected, and we have no reports of related personal injuries, we are treating it very seriously."
