"The recommended daily dose is 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D during those autumn and winter months," Dr. Oscar explained. This translates to a daily supplement of 10 micrograms for adults and children over one year old, typically taken between October and early March.

But here's where it gets controversial: many over-the-counter supplements contain much higher doses, often ranging from 800 to 1,000 IU. Dr. Oscar cautioned, "If you're consistently taking more than 4,000 IU, you're at risk of a vitamin D overdose."

The NHS warns that long-term excessive vitamin D intake can lead to hypercalcaemia, a condition where calcium builds up in the body. Dr. Duke explained the potential consequences: "Excess calcium can affect your heart and lead to calcium stones in your kidneys. It can even cause stomach issues."

While vitamin D toxicity is considered rare, it's still important to be mindful of our intake. The Food Standards Agency recommends a safe upper limit of 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) per day for adults.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK, with government data showing that around one in six adults have low levels during winter. So, it's a delicate balance - we need enough vitamin D, but not too much.
