A tragic accident has left a Texas community reeling, as three young brothers lost their lives after falling through the ice on a frozen pond. This heartbreaking story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk beneath the surface, even in seemingly peaceful settings.
The incident occurred in Bonham, north Texas, where the boys, aged six, eight, and nine, were playing near a private pond, approximately 100 feet from the house where their family was staying. Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, a parent to six children, recounted the harrowing events that unfolded on that fateful Monday.
"It was like a scene from a nightmare," Hangaman shared with CBS News. "The youngest tried to ice skate on the thin layer of ice, and when he fell through, the older brothers jumped in to save him. I could see the panic in their eyes as they struggled to stay afloat in the freezing water."
In a desperate attempt to rescue her sons, Hangaman bravely entered the water, but the ice continued to break beneath her. "There were three of them, and I was alone. I did my best, but the ice kept giving way, and I couldn't reach them all," she explained.
The mother's screams for help were heard by a neighbor, a football coach at the boys' school, who rushed to the scene. With the assistance of a horse rope, the neighbor was able to pull Hangaman to safety.
Emergency workers and another neighbor arrived shortly after and managed to pull the two older boys from the water, rushing them to a local hospital. However, the search for the six-year-old proved more challenging, and it was only after an extensive search of the pond that his body was recovered.
The local sheriff's office released a statement, confirming the identities of the boys as Howard Doss, six, Kaleb Doss, eight, and EJ Doss, nine. Hangaman described her sons with love and admiration, sharing their unique personalities and dreams. EJ aspired to be a football star, Kaleb loved to dance and sing, and Howard brought laughter to everyone around him.
The boys' school expressed their devastation in a letter to families, offering counseling services to students and staff to cope with this unimaginable loss.
