A tragic story unfolds: Emma Tuff, a 36-year-old mother, has died shortly after her release from prison, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Emma Tuff, who had previously resided in Denton, Tameside, passed away in October after being released from HMP Styal, a women's prison located in Wilmslow, Cheshire. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO), an independent body responsible for investigating deaths in custody and those that occur shortly after release, has confirmed that an investigation is underway.
The PPO's website has released details, including her date of birth, confirming that Tuff, a mother of five, died on October 24th of this year. However, the specific details surrounding her death remain undisclosed as the investigation proceeds.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the first time Tuff's name has been in the headlines. In March 2021, the Manchester Evening News reported on a high-speed police chase that Tuff led, culminating in a collision. The incident began when she failed to stop for officers in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, while driving a Renault Megane.
A three-minute chase ensued, with Tuff reaching speeds of up to 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. She was reported to have driven through multiple red lights and overtaken other vehicles in an attempt to evade the police. The chase ended when she collided with a Ford Transit van, sending it airborne. The driver of the van sustained whiplash injuries.
The court heard that Tuff, who had no fixed address at the time but was reportedly from Denton, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. She was subsequently sentenced to 14 months in prison.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Tuff was driving without a license or insurance and was already banned from driving. The incident occurred on April 14, 2020.
And this is the part most people miss... The prosecution also disclosed that Tuff had a significant criminal history, with 15 previous convictions for 32 offenses, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Ombudsman has not released any further information about her death.
