According to Circular Materials' CEO, Allen Langdon, a subset of households in Districts 2 and 3 within the City of Toronto missed their designated recycling collection dates on January 2nd and 3rd, 2026. These districts, including neighborhoods east and west of Yonge Street, had received postcards indicating the special post-holiday collection days. But, as it turns out, not everyone received their recycling collection as promised. This has sparked frustration among residents, who are now left wondering about the accountability and reliability of the new private service. Toronto-St. Paul's Coun. Josh Matlow has been vocal about the issue, expressing his outrage over the lack of recycling pickup and the inconvenience it has caused residents. He believes that the service should be returned to the city, stating, 'I do believe that a service like this should be returned to the city, because ultimately, people need to know that when something doesn't happen as well as they were expecting, that they know who to hold to account.' The controversy doesn't stop there. Coun. Matlow places the blame on Ontario Premier Doug Ford for 'meddling' with a service that was previously working well. He argues that recycling is a basic city service that should be provided by local government, and the privatization has led to a breakdown in service. Premier Ford, however, remains open to hearing concerns and is willing to make changes if the new service doesn't work as intended. He stated, 'The company that's doing it... make no mistake, if it doesn't work, we'll change it.'
