Get ready, because Kagera Region in Tanzania is about to become a powerhouse for innovation and education! On December 15, 2025, a significant step was taken towards shaping the future of East Africa: the official launch of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Kagera Campus in Bukoba District. This event promises to reshape the landscape of higher education and regional integration.
The launch, spearheaded by Tanzania’s Vice President, Hon. Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, marked the laying of the foundation stone at Itahwa Village. He framed the project as a vital investment in youth empowerment, skills development, and fostering economic growth across borders.
The event was graced by prominent national figures, including former President Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Prof. Adolf Mkenda, and Kagera Regional Commissioner Fatma Mwassa, who hosted the event.
During his address, Dr. Nchimbi emphasized that the UDSM Kagera Campus would welcome students from both Tanzania and the broader East African Community (EAC). He envisioned the region becoming a central hub for knowledge creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
"This campus is more than just a place of learning," Dr. Nchimbi stated. "It's a pathway to empowerment and a launchpad for innovation, where young people from all over East Africa can develop ideas that will drive economic growth and competitiveness in the common market."
But here's where it gets interesting... Considering Kagera's strategic location, bordering Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, the Vice President urged the University of Dar es Salaam to focus on practical, market-relevant curricula. He highlighted entrepreneurship, marketing, and cross-border trade skills as crucial areas of focus.
Do you think this emphasis on practical skills is the right approach? Is it more important than traditional academic subjects? Let me know your thoughts!
