Sri Lanka's Education Reform Controversy: Namal Rajapaksa's Take (2026)

The Grade VI English Module Controversy: A Response from Namal Rajapaksa - Breaking News | Daily Mirror

Colombo, January 10 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has stated that there is no need for further discussion with the government regarding the controversy surrounding the Grade VI English Language module. This module was introduced as part of the new education reforms, but it has faced criticism for allegedly containing inappropriate references.

In a media statement following a Buddhist religious sermon organized by the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA), MP Rajapaksa made several claims. He alleged that the Prime Minister and the relevant subject minister are aware of the individuals responsible for inserting the disputed content into the module. Additionally, he stated that both have acknowledged the inclusion of incorrect material in the Grade VI English textbook.

MP Rajapaksa emphasized the SLPP's stance against any attempts to damage Sri Lankan culture. He argued that education reforms should be tailored to the country's unique social and cultural context, rather than being copied from foreign models. This perspective aligns with the party's consistent position.

Furthermore, he accused the current government of deflecting blame onto the previous administration for the shortcomings in the new education reforms. He claimed that the government's implementation of these reforms has been inadequate.

Despite these criticisms, MP Rajapaksa assured that the SLPP will introduce suitable education reforms focused on national development once it regains power. This commitment highlights the party's dedication to improving the education system in Sri Lanka.
