Every driver should be aware that speeding near schools not only endangers lives but also demonstrates a blatant disregard for safety. And here’s where it gets controversial: recently, in Cornwall, two motorists were caught traveling at dangerously high speeds—50 mph or more—in a zone strictly limited to 30 mph, right outside a primary school.
This incident took place during routine speed enforcement conducted by officers from Devon and Cornwall Police. They set up speed checks on the A3058 William Hoskin Road, which runs past Nansledan Primary School, on a Monday morning. The timing was significant—they arrived around 7:00 a.m., just as the city was waking up; it was lightly snowing, and icy conditions persisted until they left at nearly 10:00 a.m. The weather, coupled with the meager visibility, made the need for cautious driving even more critical.
According to Inspector Dave Routley from the local road safety team, even at these excessive speeds, a driver’s ability to respond swiftly—such as if a child suddenly runs into the road—is severely compromised. "At these speeds, reaction times are minimal, and stopping distances increase dramatically, especially on icy roads," he emphasized.
While police acknowledged that most drivers in the vicinity were respecting the speed limits, they found it disappointing that a small minority still exceeded them by a large margin. Running at 50 mph or more in a 30 mph zone is a blatant infringement of road safety rules and poses a serious threat to pedestrians, particularly children heading to or from school.
Police spokesperson Dave Routley highlighted the serious consequences of speeding, indicating that exceeding safe and legal limits is among the top causes of fatal and severe road accidents. He pointed out a troubling statistic: approximately four individuals die every day on roads across Britain, and human error—the primary factor in most collisions—is often exacerbated by reckless driving behaviors like speeding.
He further warned that in icy conditions, such as those experienced that morning, the ability to stop promptly is greatly diminished, making speeding even more dangerous. "It’s crucial for drivers to not only adhere to speed limits but also adapt their driving to suit current weather and road conditions. As snow and ice continue to forecast, prudence becomes even more vital," he urged.
