A bold move by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) has sent ripples through the training industry, with new guidelines that could shake up the landscape. The future of skills development is at stake, and these changes are here to stay.
SSG has announced stricter rules for course approval and funding, impacting over 9,500 courses across 500 training providers. But here's where it gets controversial: these changes are designed to ensure that training is aligned with industry needs, focusing on skills that are currently in demand for existing jobs.
For new courses, there are now two approval routes. The first is based on a list of skills deemed essential for Singapore's economy and good job growth. At least half of the skills taught in the course must be from this list. Alternatively, courses can be endorsed by regulatory or professional bodies, ensuring they meet mandatory training requirements set by government agencies.
But the real game-changer is the funding renewal requirements. From December 31, 2025, courses will need at least 40% of their participants to be sponsored by employers. SSG believes this is a strong indicator of industry relevance. Additionally, courses must achieve a 75% response rate in the TRAQOM survey and maintain a high quality rating.
These new benchmarks are designed to ensure that courses remain relevant and of high quality. But here's the part most people miss: these changes could potentially exclude courses that focus on emerging skills or career switches, as they are not the primary focus of these guidelines.
