Can you believe it? The Cleveland Browns have had a staggering **42 different quarterbacks start games since 1999!** It's a revolving door that has left fans yearning for stability.
Shedeur Sanders, wearing the familiar number 12, has just become the latest name on this lengthy list. But can he be the one to finally break the cycle?
Let's rewind a bit. Before Sanders, there was Bernie Kosar, the last quarterback to lead the Browns to consecutive winning seasons, way back in the late 1980s. Kosar, wearing the iconic number 19, was a symbol of hope for Browns fans. He even led the team to the playoffs five times!
Now, imagine being a younger fan, just getting into the Browns. You might remember Ty Detmer, the first quarterback after the franchise's return in 1999. Then came Tim Couch, who played a significant number of games but faced constant injuries. And of course, there's Baker Mayfield, who, despite his ups and downs, brought the team to the playoffs.
But here's where it gets controversial... Since Mayfield's departure, the Browns have churned through 10 different starting quarterbacks in just 3.5 seasons! That's a lot of names to remember.
So, who's in the current lineup? Jacoby Brissett, Deshaun Watson, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, P.J. Walker, Joe Flacco, Jeff Driskel, Jameis Winston, Bailey Zappe, Dillon Gabriel, and now, Shedeur Sanders.
The good news? Sanders has a lot of fans, including over 2 million social media followers. He's also the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, adding to the pressure and expectations.
In his first start, Sanders showed poise, despite the pressure. While the defense played a huge role in the win against Las Vegas, Sanders made some impressive plays, including a long pass to Isaiah Bond.
Sanders finished with 11 of 20 passing for 209 yards. He became the first Browns rookie to win his first start since 1995.
Currently, the only Cleveland QBs since 1999 with winning records are Brian Hoyer (10-6) and Joe Flacco (5-4).
Welcome to the club, Shedeur Sanders! You're number 42 on the list, but we're all hoping your number 12 can stick around and bring some much-needed stability to Cleveland.
