A Name Change Debate: Unraveling the Story Behind Kotoka Airport
In a recent interview, Sekou Nkrumah, the son of Ghana's iconic first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, shared his thoughts on the proposed renaming of Kotoka International Airport. This move has sparked a nationwide discussion, and Sekou's insights offer a unique perspective on the matter.
The proposed change, as revealed by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, aims to transform Kotoka International Airport into Accra International Airport. But here's where it gets controversial: the airport's current name pays tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, one of the soldiers who played a role in overthrowing Kwame Nkrumah.
Sekou Nkrumah questioned the rationale behind this name change, stating that it doesn't make a significant difference to most Ghanaians whether the airport retains its current name or adopts a new one. In his interview with the Ghanaian Times, he emphasized that the history behind the name is well-known, and the proposed change warrants public explanation.
"It's not a personal matter for me as Nkrumah's son. This concerns all Ghanaians. We all know the airport was named after Kotoka because he died in the airport area. The name has stood for years, so why the sudden change? It's not a simple matter of convenience. For most Ghanaians, whether it's Kotoka or Accra International Airport, it doesn't make any difference."
Sekou further delved into the potential reasons for the name change, raising thought-provoking questions. He suggested that if the government's logic is to distance itself from coup makers, then a consistent approach should be applied. This would mean removing the names of past heads of state who came to power through coups, including Rawlings, Acheampong, and others.
He argued that if the issue lies with General Kotoka's involvement in the coup against Dr. Nkrumah, then the focus should be on the CIA's role in orchestrating the coup. Sekou questioned whether Ghana should sever ties with the USA due to the CIA's involvement, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of such historical matters.
"If the reason is that Nkrumah was overthrown and we can't honor those involved, then we must remember that the CIA played a key role. So, are we prepared to break relations with the USA? These name changes open up sensitive historical issues. Do we, as a nation, want to revisit the past or keep it as part of our history?"
Sekou also addressed the political tension that could arise from such a name change, especially considering Nkrumah's legacy and the varying opinions on his rule. He believes that by changing the airport's name, political tensions may be unnecessarily exacerbated.
