To integrate the Aerobag technology into cycling apparel, some modifications are necessary. Van Loggerenberg clarifies, "We make these adjustments mainly to ensure that the tubes are positioned correctly, allowing for inflation at the appropriate zones on the body." This involves adding small elastic loops that secure the tubes in place for optimal performance.

It's important to note that the Aerobag is marketed as a separate unit rather than a permanent feature of any single garment. As Van Loggerenberg states, "You purchase the airbag system independently, and then you can pair it with your bib shorts, jacket, or other gear as needed."

Despite its promising design being lightweight and compact, Van Loggerenberg acknowledges that the price point is still a consideration: "We aim to keep it around €750 to €800, which is relatively steep due to the advanced technology involved."

The inspiration for creating the Aerobag stemmed from a tragic incident involving young Belgian cyclist Bjorg Lambrecht, who suffered a fatal crash. Van Loggerenberg passionately conveyed, "After his accident, we knew there had to be a safer way to allow riders to navigate the roads at high speeds—Lycra alone is simply not enough protection at 70 km/h."

Team Picnic PostNL's Adoption of Aerobag

Team Picnic PostNL has publicly confirmed their intention to implement the Aerobag system, with Van Loggerenberg mentioning that another prominent WorldTour team is also preparing to reveal their adoption of this innovative technology. As the team's clothing sponsor, Nalini is developing the initial integrated kit in collaboration with Aerobag, aiming for broader availability soon.

"Nalini is our early adopter, creating outfits specifically for Picnic PostNL," Van Loggerenberg noted. "They are committed to partnering with us to expand access to this technology for the upcoming season."

Moreover, discussions with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling's governing body, regarding the potential adoption of the Aerobag system are already underway. Van Loggerenberg expressed optimism about the UCI's response, citing Belgian labor laws that protect the rights of athletes to utilize safety equipment if they choose to do so.

When asked about the effectiveness of this system, he confidently remarked, "The reason you can't buy a car without an airbag is simple—they work."
