A tense Champions League knockout clash between Benfica and Real Madrid was interrupted for 10 minutes after Vinicius Junior and his teammates walked off the pitch following alleged racist abuse.
Referee Francois Letexier signaled the issue by making a crossed-arms gesture after a discussion with Vinicius, who had earlier put Real Madrid ahead in the second half at the Estadio da Luz. Vinicius had been booked for an excessive celebration moments before the incident.
After exchanging words with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, Vinicius approached the referee while pointing toward the opposing player, then returned to the field only to leave again as Real Madrid’s players followed him. The match resumed ten minutes later, in the 60th minute.
The game ultimately finished with Real Madrid winning 1-0 after 12 minutes of added time. During that stoppage period, an object was thrown from the stands and struck Vinicius on the arm.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Real Madrid teammate, called the incident a "disgrace to football" in an interview with Amazon Prime after the final whistle. He said, “It’s a difficult situation. Hopefully there’s justice. There is no place for it in football or society.”
