The Mediterranean monk seal, a rare and majestic creature, is facing a new threat in the form of Greece's booming marine leisure industry. These seals, once protected by mythical gods, are now struggling to find safe haven in their natural breeding grounds due to the influx of unregulated tourism. With a global population of less than 1,000, the monk seals are vulnerable and in need of urgent protection. But here's where it gets controversial... While some initiatives, like Seal Greece and the establishment of a 200-meter no-entry zone around Formicula islet, are making a difference, the management structure of marine protected areas (MPAs) is unclear. This leaves the seals vulnerable to human disturbance, entanglement in fishing gear, food depletion, pollution, and habitat loss. The future of these rare mammals is uncertain, and it's up to us to ensure their survival. So, what can we do? The answer lies in the hands of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, who need more boats and people to patrol the MPAs. But with time running out, the question remains: will we be able to protect these seals and their habitats, or will we let them slip away into the depths of the sea?
