Police Raids Tamale in Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
In a significant operation, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has targeted Tamale, including the bustling Central Business District, as part of a broader strategy to combat drug-related crimes. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the escalating drug abuse problem in the Northern Region.
The team's recent activities have been focused on Gurugu, the Tamale bus stop, and other strategic locations identified through intelligence reports as hotspots for illicit drug activities. These locations have been subject to similar raids in Yendi, Tolon, and Savelugu, aiming to disrupt the operations of illegal drug dealers and users across the region.
The leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, ASP Abdul Bawah Jalil, shared positive outcomes with the media. He stated that drug use and trafficking have significantly decreased since the team's deployment in the Northern Region. The team has successfully arrested numerous suspects, with many cases currently in court, some under remand, and others already sentenced.
ASP Jalil expressed gratitude for the judiciary's support, emphasizing its vital role in the operation's success. He also addressed the ongoing crackdown's purpose, emphasizing the interest in maintaining peace and security in Northern Ghana. He warned against attempts to politicize or associate the issue with traditional authority, stating that the fight against criminal networks is a collective effort for the people of the North.
Furthermore, ASP Jalil appealed to parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children and discourage drug abuse. He issued a stern warning that offenders will face legal consequences. He urged parents to ensure their children stay away from drugs, stating that the team will continue to arrest them and allow the law to take its course if they fail to comply.
