NT Government's Climate Resilience Plan: Accelerating Beetaloo Gas Project (2026)

The Northern Territory's climate resilience plan has sparked intense debate, with critics arguing that its primary focus on accelerating gas extraction from the Beetaloo Basin is a step backward in the fight against climate change. This plan, while emphasizing a 'secure and reliable energy transition', has been heavily criticized by environmental groups and climate experts alike.

One of the key issues lies in the plan's emphasis on 'low-emissions gas' from the Beetaloo Basin. The document claims that this gas is relatively low in emissions due to its low carbon dioxide content. However, this claim is met with skepticism from experts like Ben McLeod, who argues that no gas can be considered 'low-emissions' when the burning of fossil fuels inevitably releases greenhouse gases. The argument is that even with a small reduction in emissions, the overall impact on the environment and public health is detrimental.

The plan's lack of support for remote communities is another point of contention. Suki Dorras-Walker from the Greens party highlights the irony of a climate resilience plan that fails to address the needs of those most vulnerable to climate change impacts, such as recent flooding victims.

The Northern Territory, along with Western Australia, stands out as the only Australian jurisdictions without legislated emissions reduction targets. This has led to criticism from the Climate Council, which points out that the Territory is moving in the opposite direction of the rest of Australia and the world, particularly in terms of renewable energy development.

The plan's timing is also significant. It comes on the heels of the federal Liberal Party's decision to abandon its climate goals, and the Northern Territory's Country Liberal Party government has been questioned about its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. The government's response, acknowledging the federal targets, does little to assuage concerns about its own stance on climate action.

In my opinion, the Northern Territory's climate resilience plan is a missed opportunity. While the government aims to ensure energy security, the approach of prioritizing gas extraction over emissions reduction and renewable energy development is short-sighted. The plan fails to address the urgent need for a rapid transition to a low-carbon economy and risks exacerbating the very climate issues it aims to mitigate. It is a reminder that words alone are not enough; meaningful action is required to protect our planet and its inhabitants.
