Mapapalangi's rugby league path began in 2022 when he debuted in the NRL with the Newcastle Knights. He played a handful of games for the Knights before departing at the end of the 2024 season. His move to the Wests Tigers in 2025 saw him spend the year in reserve grade, unable to break into the senior team under coach Benji Marshall. He'll be joining a Castleford side under the guidance of Ryan Carr, who previously served as an assistant and interim head coach for the St George Illawarra Dragons. Mapapalangi expressed his excitement about the move, noting, "I've heard plenty of great things about the club, who pride themselves on hard work as a blue-collar town." He joins a growing list of signings with NRL experience, including Blake Taaffe, Semi Valemei, Mikaele Ravalawa, Tom Weaver, and Renouf Atoni. Coach Ryan Carr is clearly thrilled with the direction the squad is taking. He stated, "I'm really pleased to see this deal over the line, it's been one we have been discussing since I arrived at the club. Maps has got all the attributes needed to succeed in the Super League and he's another great addition to the squad." He believes the team has "a lot to be excited about in 2026" and that this signing "only gives me more confidence in what we are building here in Cas."
Director of Football, Chris Chester, highlighted the strategic nature of the signing. "Krystian is a player we identified a number of weeks ago. He's an athletic centre who has experience in the NRL and NSW Cup. On top of all that he's a great person and a player I know Carr can take to the next level." Chester also emphasized the careful consideration given to the signing, ensuring it was the "right fit for all."
