MRT Service Resumes on EWL: Smooth Navigation at Tanah Merah Station After Track Works (2026)

Imagine the relief! After a week of navigating detours and adjusting commutes, commuters on Singapore's East-West Line (EWL) breathed a collective sigh of relief as the MRT service between Bedok and Tampines, as well as Tanah Merah and Expo, resumed smoothly on December 8th – a whole day ahead of schedule!

This early return to normalcy was a welcome change for many, including 38-year-old Faye Wong, a Tampines resident who had to add a hefty 30 minutes to her daily work commute in Orchard. Forced to take a bus and switch lines, she, like many others, was thrilled to discover the train service was back up and running.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the good news on December 7th, confirming the completion of track works and comprehensive testing. This service suspension, which lasted from November 29th to December 7th, was necessary to connect the EWL to the upcoming East Coast Integrated Depot, slated to begin operations in the second half of 2026. This project also included the construction of a new platform at Tanah Merah station.

This was the second of three planned service suspensions, with the final one scheduled for the first half of 2026.

For some, like cabin crew member Christopher Ling, 25, the resumption meant a return to the direct MRT route from Simei to Changi Airport, eliminating the need for shuttle buses and the Downtown Line (DTL). He mentioned that he sometimes had to resort to private hire cars because of the longer commute.

But here's where it gets interesting: The changes at Tanah Merah station required passengers heading towards Expo and Changi Airport to adjust their routine. Instead of simply crossing the platform, they now need to disembark at Platform A, use escalators, stairs, or lifts to the passenger service area, and then ascend to Platform D.

To help passengers navigate these changes, nearly 10 ground staff members were stationed at Tanah Merah station from 7:30 am to 8:45 am. They used portable microphones to make announcements and guide passengers. Clear signage with downward-pointing arrows was also prominently displayed, ensuring minimal confusion.

Ms. Rashidah Abu, 55, found the signs clear and easy to follow, while Mr. Sundaramoorthy Pandiyan, 40, adapted to the new layout quickly. At Expo and Tampines stations, staff and pre-recorded announcements further assisted passengers. Shuttle buses continued to operate until around 9 am.
