Quest v83 Brings System Positional TimeWarp & Temporal Dimming
Quest's Horizon OS v83 introduces System Positional TimeWarp (SysPTW) and Temporal Dimming as experimental features, along with enhanced scene understanding.
A test version of v83 was released to the Horizon OS Public Test Channel (PTC) last month, allowing users to test these features and the improved 'Navigator' system UI. Now, a stable build of v83 is available for all supported Quest headsets.
Quest v83 PTC Features Evolved Horizon OS UI and Scene Understanding
The Horizon OS v83 PTC includes the updated Quest system UI, which Meta showcased at Connect, along with scene understanding for slanted ceilings and inner walls.
Meta's gradual rollout process means it may take a few days or weeks for your headset to receive the v83 update. Additionally, some features are released separately from the main update, so having the v83 update doesn't guarantee access to all features.
System Positional TimeWarp (SysPTW)
SysPTW is an experimental feature in Horizon OS v83 that eliminates rotational latency by reprojecting frames to match the head's orientation change. This ensures a smoother VR experience, especially when apps fail to render frames in time for the next display refresh.
Temporal Dimming
Temporal Dimming is another experimental feature in v83, designed to reduce eye strain, extend battery life, and improve display performance without compromising the user experience. It gradually adjusts screen brightness during each session.
Improved Scene Understanding
Quest 3 and Quest 3S now create a 3D mesh of the room during mixed reality Space Setup. Meta's system can identify main walls, floor, and ceiling positions, and since v64, it also generates labeled bounding boxes for various objects, including doors, windows, beds, tables, sofas, storage, and screens.
Quest developers can utilize Meta's Scene API to automatically place virtual content, such as gameboards or portals, based on the room's layout.
Web Browser Enhancements
Quest's web browser is being expanded with ad-blocking and VPN extensions, offering a more comprehensive browsing experience. Users can now log into certain websites via their phone, sending a link to the Meta Horizon smartphone app, currently supporting Roblox and TikTok.
Meta aims to provide a seamless web browsing experience on Quest, but the process is gradual, and not all features are immediately available.
