The Los Angeles Lakers are setting their sights on reshaping their front office to take inspiration from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have clinched back-to-back World Series titles, particularly following the acquisition of the team by Mark Walter in October 2025.
In a discussion following a recent victory over the Golden State Warriors, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka shared insights about how the team's collaboration with Walter, who also heads the Dodgers, could influence their future strategies. "It's been fantastic to have external allies and supporters observe the Dodgers’ achievements and the solid foundation they’ve established. We’re fortunate to have access to individuals like Andrew Friedman, who provide invaluable best practices," Pelinka mentioned, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Pelinka elaborated on the discussions that took place when Walter purchased the franchise: "Jeanie and I really engaged in an in-depth conversation with him regarding the areas where he envisions growth and innovation. The Dodgers' model for development has served as an exemplary guide and a goal for us. We're still navigating how our approach will evolve in the offseason and what enhancements we plan to implement. However, there will certainly be some positive transformations as we expand our operations."
Among these anticipated changes is the Lakers' intention to adopt the Dodgers' methodology for drafting players and structuring their farm system, according to McMenamin’s report.
These comments come on the heels of an article by The Athletic’s Dan Woike, which highlighted the Lakers' ambition to emulate the Dodgers' front office strategies, with one opposing executive noting, "It’s going to be intimidating to see how this unfolds."
As the trade deadline approached on Thursday, the Lakers made a strategic move by trading guard Gabe Vincent along with a second-round pick in 2032 to the Atlanta Hawks, acquiring sharpshooter Luke Kennard in return. While Los Angeles is currently focused on securing a playoff spot, it is also dedicated to identifying long-term assets to complement Luka Dončić, aiming to establish themselves as a perennial contender in the fiercely competitive Western Conference.
In October 2025, the Buss family made headlines by agreeing to sell their majority stake in the Lakers to Mark Walter, valuing the franchise at an impressive $10 billion. NBA insider Jovan Buha later revealed that post-sale, the Lakers intend to enhance their scouting department and overall front office structure to ensure competitiveness with the league's leading franchises.
While the future role of general manager Rob Pelinka remains uncertain amidst these expected transitions, it’s noteworthy that he secured a contract extension in April 2025 and was appointed as the president of basketball operations in addition to his general manager duties.
Currently, the Lakers hold the fifth position in the Western Conference standings, boasting a record of 31 wins and 19 losses.
