Labour MPs Speak Out: Starmer's Asylum Plans Under Fire (2026)

Starmer Faces Fresh Challenge as Labour MPs Condemn Asylum Plans

Keir Starmer is facing a significant challenge to his leadership as angry Labour MPs have vowed to force changes to the government's new, hardline migration policies. These policies, which include the possibility of confiscating assets from asylum seekers to cover costs, have sparked intense divisions within the party. Some MPs accuse their colleagues of not taking seriously the public's anger over illegal migration and asylum issues.

The Conservatives have offered support to the government in passing these tough new laws, should a major Labour rebellion occur. The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has outlined a series of radical measures, including an attempt to alter how UK judges interpret the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to prevent asylum seekers from using their rights to a family life to avoid deportation.

The policies include a consultation on enforcing the removal of families, including children, who have been refused settlement in the UK and have refused payments encouraging them to leave. This has caused widespread concern among Labour MPs, with at least 20 publicly expressing their worries.

MPs have raised concerns about the 'morally bankrupt' approach to increasing deportations of families, which would mean longer detentions of children before removal. Some have criticized the government's rhetoric about Britain being the 'destination of choice' for refugees, which they argue is misleading.

However, some MPs argue that the need to tackle illegal immigration is urgent, citing the threat of Reform and draconian measures under a potential Nigel Farage government. They believe that the public is moving faster than their colleagues in recognizing the changing nature of the 'deserving refugee' stereotype.

Despite the controversy, the government plans to make refugee status temporary, reviewed every 30 months, and to weaken asylum seekers' rights under Article 8 of the ECHR. They also aim to form a new appeals body to accelerate removals and lobby to 'evolve' Article 3 of the ECHR to prevent its misuse by criminals.

Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, warns that these reforms may create more delays and stress for asylum seekers, rather than solving the underlying issues in the asylum system.
