The Great Kiwi Exodus: A Tale of Opportunity and Culture
In a bold move, Lucy Griggs, a 24-year-old social media manager, shared her journey from Wellington to Brisbane. Her story is a testament to the allure of Australia for many Kiwis, as evidenced by the staggering net migration loss of 46,400 in the September 2025 year. But here's where it gets controversial: is the grass truly greener on the other side of the Tasman?
"Why wouldn't I move?" Griggs asks, echoing the sentiments of thousands. She cites a myriad of reasons, from career prospects to a positive cultural environment and a more reasonable cost of living. In New Zealand, she felt trapped in a cycle of paycheck-to-paycheck living, unable to save for the future without sacrificing the present. Australia, she believed, offered a chance to break free from that cycle.
"It's about fair value for work," she explains. "I'm not getting paid more here, but I'm getting paid what I deserve. I can finally save and indulge in life's little luxuries."
But life in Australia isn't without its challenges. Griggs acknowledges the difficulty of finding a job, especially with the influx of Kiwis seeking opportunities. "If you apply for an entry-level job, you're competing with hundreds of other applicants," she says. Her strategy? Networking and in-person resume drops, which landed her supermarket and retail jobs.
Housing and grocery shopping present stark differences between the two countries. "Rent is still pricey in Brisbane, but I get a clean, air-conditioned space for the same price as a mouldy flat in Wellington. I'm no longer paying to get sick," she says. The most noticeable difference, however, is the cost of food. "Groceries are significantly cheaper here. Kiwis are always shocked by how affordable fruit is!"
The ability to enjoy her daily life is what makes the biggest impact. "I'm not great with budgeting, but I can afford to socialize and not feel judged for it. Everyone here does it; it's a casual drinks and dinners kind of culture."
As a creative, Griggs found inspiration in Australia's startup culture. "Just being here is motivating. People are starting their own companies, and there's a real incentive to pursue your dreams. Back home, it felt like you needed a wealthy background or a huge loan to get started. Here, it's all about connections and support."
The cultural difference was initially intimidating. "New Zealand has a humble culture; we're taught not to brag. Here, everyone is confident and motivated, even in their athletic wear! It was a bit overwhelming."
But she soon embraced the Australian attitude. "I felt no shame in pursuing my career as a social media manager. The attitude here is 'Do it! Go for it!' It's incredibly positive."
So, would she return to New Zealand? "The scenery, nature, and bird song are what make New Zealand home. I miss the rivers and hiking. If I moved back, I'd probably go to the South Island for the views. But I haven't seen any snakes in Australia, and the huntsman spiders aren't as bad as I was warned!"
Ultimately, it's about opportunity and affordability. "I loved growing up in New Zealand, and I'd want the same for my kids. But could I afford it? Maybe not."
