Hubert Hurkacz's triumphant return ignites Poland's United Cup dreams! After a nail-biting match, Poland is heading to the quarter-finals of the United Cup. On Wednesday, Hubert Hurkacz showcased his prowess by defeating Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets, securing Poland's place in the final eight.
Hurkacz's performance was nothing short of spectacular. He dominated with his serve, firing an impressive 20 aces and never facing a break point. This victory was particularly significant, as Poland needed just one win to advance in this mixed-teams event.
But here's where it gets interesting: Hurkacz hadn't competed since June 2025 due to a knee injury that required surgery. Making a comeback after a seven-month hiatus, he surprised everyone, including himself. "I was playing okay in practice, but practice is so different from the match when you have so many emotions, you have fans around. I’m quite positively surprised and pleased with that performance out there," Hurkacz shared.
Before this tournament, the former No. 6 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has come out firing in the new season with straight-sets victories against World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and Griekspoor. He is quoted saying, "After such a long period you’re just so excited to be out there and it also gives you a different perspective on things. I think that’s why I’m able to perform maybe better and even stay calm in the difficult moments."
Poland is now set to clash with the home favorite, Australia, on Friday evening in Sydney. This promises to be a thrilling encounter. Poland, having finished as runners-up in the past two editions, is now eyeing its first United Cup triumph.
