The Fight Against Galamsey: A Bold Approach Needed, Says Lawyer Danso
By Love Wilhelmina Abanonave
In a recent panel discussion on GBC's Current Agenda, lawyer and President of the Accountability Forum, Kwame Owusu Danso Esq, advocated for a strong and aggressive stance against illegal mining, also known as 'galamsey'. He proposed a 'shoot and kill' approach, emphasizing the need for a drastic change in strategy.
Danso argued that the country's approach to tackling galamsey should not be a casual or relaxed one. He stated, 'If we genuinely believe that galamsey poses a significant threat to the country's survival, then our approach must become more aggressive.'
The lawyer acknowledged that the 'shoot and kill' strategy might seem extreme, but he believes it's a necessary step. He added, 'Desperate times call for desperate measures, and our country is in desperate need of solutions.'
Danso expressed disappointment in the government's lack of bold solutions to address the issue. He mentioned that small-scale mining has political implications, often used to restrict politicians' actions. He cited examples where galamsey culprits use the 'no jobs' excuse to justify their actions, which ties politicians' hands in the fight against illegal mining.
The lawyer concluded by highlighting the need for a more assertive and proactive approach to combat galamsey, urging the country to take decisive action to protect its interests and security.
