Levinson offered a glimpse at the forthcoming season during an event in London, with BBC reporting that the core group of young actors—Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney—have matured since Season 2, which aired in early 2022. He explained that advancing the timeline by five years felt natural: if the characters went to college, they’d already be well into adulthood by now.
For Rue, Zendaya’s central character, the season places her “south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie” (Martha Kelly), and she’s devising inventive ways to earn repayment. The fate of Cassie and Nate, portrayed by Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, remains a focal point. Levinson describes Cassie as living in the suburbs with Nate, engaged and deeply absorbed by social media, envious of the high-school classmates’ seemingly larger-than-life experiences. He hints that their wedding will be unforgettable for viewers.
Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, will be pursuing art studies and a path as an artist. Maddy, portrayed by Alexa Demie, is anticipated to work in Hollywood at a talent agency. Lexi, played by Maude Apatow, joins the season as an assistant to a showrunner played by Sharon Stone.
Levinson insists this could be the best season yet, a bold claim that fans will be watching closely as filming advances toward the April release window.
The show has already cemented its cultural impact: Zendaya’s Emmy wins for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series—in 2020 at age 24, making her the youngest winner at the time; and again in 2022, she became the youngest woman to win twice in the category and the first Black woman to achieve that milestone.
Season 3 will exclude several familiar faces, including Austin Abrams, Barbie Ferreira, Algee Smith, and Storm Reed. The late Angus Cloud, who delivered a memorable, tender portrayal of Fezco, passed away at 25 in 2023.
