A Billion-Dollar Scandal: Will Minnesota Lose Federal Funding?
In a bold move, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has issued a stern warning to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The state's Medicaid program is under scrutiny for alleged fraud, and Dr. Oz is demanding action.
"We're talking about over a billion dollars stolen from taxpayers!" Dr. Oz exclaimed in a recent X post. "This massive fraud scheme, allegedly carried out by individuals within the Somali community, has serious implications. Some of these funds may have even supported terrorist activities, which is incredibly concerning."
But here's where it gets controversial... Dr. Oz believes that Governor Walz and his administration bear responsibility for this scandal. "Our CMS staff is shocked by the scale of this fraud. Everyone, from the Governor down, needs to be held accountable for their lack of oversight."
Dr. Oz has given Governor Walz a 60-day ultimatum to take corrective measures, including:
- Providing weekly updates to CMS on anti-fraud initiatives.
- Freezing the enrollment of high-risk providers for six months.
- Verifying the legitimacy of current providers or removing them from the program.
- Submitting a comprehensive corrective action plan to prevent future fraud.
"If Minnesota fails to cooperate and demonstrate a commitment to integrity, we'll have no choice but to withhold federal funding," Dr. Oz warned.
And this is the part most people miss: Dr. Oz has pointed to two specific Medicaid programs in Minnesota that have seen dramatic cost spikes. The Housing Stabilization Services program, initially projected at $2.6 million annually, paid out over $100 million in 2024! Similarly, the Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention program grew from $3 million to nearly $400 million in just five years.
"These fraudsters used taxpayer money to fund their lavish lifestyles, buying luxury cars and overseas properties. Some even offered bribes to parents to enroll their children in fake autism treatment centers. And, alarmingly, there are indications that these funds may have reached the Somalian terrorist group al-Shabab."
So, why didn't Governor Walz intervene sooner? Dr. Oz suggests it's because of his focus on identity politics. "Minnesota officials were aware of the problem but failed to take effective action. We had to step in and shut down the housing program and freeze enrollment in other abused programs."
The message to Governor Walz is clear: "Fix this within 60 days, or start preparing for a financial crisis. We're not going to continue funding incompetence."
President Donald Trump has also taken notice, recently announcing a series of actions to investigate and crack down on fraud schemes in Minnesota. He has described the state as a "hub of money laundering activity," and this scandal has led to the termination of deportation protections for Somali migrants.
This week, senior Trump administration officials, including Secretary Scott Bessent, announced new investigations, specifically targeting the alleged diversion of taxpayer dollars to the terrorist organization al-Shabab.
Governor Walz's office has yet to respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. The question remains: Will Minnesota take the necessary steps to address this scandal and retain its federal funding, or will they face the consequences of their alleged inaction?
