The Art of Trailside Relaxation
In the world of hiking, sometimes the best adventures are the ones where you barely hike at all. Day 85 of this Appalachian Trail journey is a testament to that. What was supposed to be a day of covering miles turned into a delightful detour in the charming town of Duncannon.
The Joys of a Nero Day
Nero days, where you hike less than 10 miles, can be a hiker's paradise. It's a chance to recharge, explore, and indulge in some much-needed relaxation. And that's precisely what we did in Duncannon. With limited options on a Monday, we started our day at a convenience store, resupplying and fueling up for the adventures ahead.
The Pub Life
The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the local pub. As a seasoned hiker, I've learned that pubs are often the heart and soul of a town, and this one didn't disappoint. We claimed our corner, charged our devices, and indulged in some cold beverages. It's fascinating how these places become temporary homes, offering a sense of community and camaraderie.
Personally, I find the pub culture on hiking trails to be a unique aspect of the experience. It's where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the weight of the journey is momentarily lifted. What many people don't realize is that these pit stops are not just about physical rest; they're about mental rejuvenation and the creation of lasting memories.
From Pub to Church
Our afternoon at the pub led to an unexpected twist—a decision to skip hiking altogether and check into the Church Hostel. This decision highlights the beauty of spontaneity on the trail. We found ourselves in a cozy basement setup, complete with a kitchen and a shower, a welcome change from the usual tent routine.
Ice Cream and More Pub Tales
The day's adventures didn't end there. We fulfilled our ice cream destiny, a simple pleasure that can bring immense satisfaction after a long hike (or in this case, a short one). And then, like a full-circle moment, we returned to the pub for dinner and more merriment. It's these unplanned detours that often become the most memorable parts of a journey.
The Power of Slow Travel
This day in Duncannon is a reminder that slow travel has its own rewards. It allows us to immerse ourselves in a place, connect with locals, and create unique experiences. In my opinion, it's these moments of unplanned leisure that truly define the spirit of adventure.
As hikers, we often focus on the miles covered and the destinations reached. But I believe it's crucial to embrace the in-between moments, the detours, and the days when we do less and feel more. After all, isn't the joy of travel found in the journey itself, rather than solely in the destination?
So, here's to the unexpected pub days, the ice cream detours, and the Nero days that remind us to savor every step of the trail.
