The core issue is clear: Call of Duty won’t see consecutive releases from the same sub-franchise anymore. Activision has confirmed a shift in strategy, signaling that fans won’t get back-to-back launches from sub-series like Modern Warfare or Black Ops in the near future.
In a recent update, the publisher acknowledged that the franchise has fallen short of some players’ expectations. This admission came on the heels of what insiders describe to Insider Gaming as a “rough launch” for Black Ops 7.
The official blog statement stresses transparency: “We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully. To be very clear, we know what you expect and rest assured we will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.”
Annual Returns: Will the Series Stay On Yearly Release Schedule?
Despite the candid admission and a recognition of unmet expectations, Activision indicated that annual releases will persist, promising fans an “absolutely unique experience each and every year.” Details about any new cadence or structure were kept under wraps and were described as coming “when the time is right.”
The company’s message closes on an optimistic note, projecting a strong future for Call of Duty: “To be clear, the future of Call of Duty is very strong and we believe our best days are ahead of us given the depth and talent of our development teams. We have been building the next era of Call of Duty, and it will deliver precisely on what you want along with some surprises that push the Franchise and the genre forward. We look forward to welcoming you in, listening to you, and moving forward together.”
What’s your take on Activision’s candor? Should Call of Duty abandon annual releases altogether, or is it possible to balance steady updates with meaningful innovation?
