Broadway's Box Office Success: 'The Lion King' and 'Mamma Mia' Break Records Over Holiday Week
The holiday season brought a surge in revenue for Broadway, with 'The Lion King' and 'Mamma Mia!' setting new box office records. 'The Lion King' generated $3.14 million across eight performances at the Minskoff Theatre, surpassing its 2023 holiday record, with an average ticket price of $234. 'Mamma Mia!' brought in $2.6 million, despite having nine performances, which the production team hailed as its best week ever, with an average ticket price of $187.
However, 'Hamilton' remained the top-grossing show of the week, earning $3.3 million across eight performances, followed by 'Wicked' with $3.29 million and 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' with $2.7 million. 'The Lion King' and 'Mamma Mia!' followed closely behind.
'Waiting For Godot', featuring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, played its final performance on January 4 with a 100% capacity at the Hudson Theatre, generating $1.5 million, which was higher than the previous weeks but lower than its early fall peak.
'Stranger Things: The First Shadow' continued to attract high attendance, despite a slight drop from its previous week's nine-show performance, bringing in its second-highest gross of $2 million across seven performances. The average ticket price was $177, with attendance exceeding 100%.
'Beetlejuice' concluded its Broadway run with a strong performance of $1.4 million at the Palace Theatre, marking the highest box office tally for its third Broadway run, which began in October.
Despite a 4% decline from the previous week's holiday peak, which included Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the holiday week overall saw significant box office success, with New Year's Eve and New Year's Day contributing to the impressive revenue figures.
