In honor of Nicéphore Niépce, the visionary inventor who brought us the first permanent photograph in 1826, BMW is launching an extraordinary call for applications. This fifth edition of BMW ART MAKERS is all about emerging creativity and contemporary imagery, and it's open until December 31, 2025.
A Visionary's Legacy: Nicéphore Niépce
Nicéphore Niépce, a true pioneer of the early 19th century, not only revolutionized photography but also played a role in the development of the internal combustion engine. His impact on mobility and daily life is often overlooked, but it's a fascinating part of his legacy. BMW, with its unique position at the intersection of mobility and creativity, is passionate about supporting photographic patronage and the arts.
The Call for Applications: A Creative Challenge
BMW ART MAKERS invites artist-curator duos to celebrate the rich history of photography while envisioning a future where creativity and responsibility intertwine. Since Niépce's groundbreaking invention, photography has been at the forefront of cultural and technological change. BMW shares this ambition, striving for more intelligent and sustainable mobility.
What's in Store for the Winning Duo?
The selected artist and curator will each receive grants of €10,000 and €8,000, respectively, along with a €15,000 budget for research and production. Their works will be showcased in prestigious exhibitions at Paris Photo and the Rencontres d'Arles. Additionally, they'll receive coordination and communication support.
Project Requirements: Innovation and Responsibility
Applicants are encouraged to innovate or experiment with the medium, creating a carefully designed scenography that can be reused at both exhibitions. Resourcefulness and a sober, responsible approach to resource use are key. The project should also provide an artistic perspective on contemporary issues, sparking thought and discussion.
