BJP vs Congress: Who's to Blame for Bihar Poll Results? | Chidambaram vs Poonawalla (2026)

The political arena is often a stage for dramatic clashes, and this one is no exception! Following the 2025 Bihar assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory, a war of words erupted. The BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress leader P. Chidambaram, specifically targeting his opinion piece in the Indian Express titled 'Voting is not the end of responsibilities'.

Chidambaram's article, which analyzed the election results, didn't sit well with the BJP. He expressed his disappointment that Bihar voters didn't choose a "strong Opposition." The BJP's national spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla, wasted no time in criticizing Chidambaram, accusing him of blaming the voters rather than acknowledging the Congress party's shortcomings.

"Instead of doing introspection, Congress has once again chosen to defend its prince by blaming janta," Poonawalla wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He further highlighted Chidambaram's statement that it is the voters' responsibility to bring the Opposition to power, calling it "entitled and delusional."

Poonawalla didn't stop there. He went on to accuse the Congress of finding fault everywhere but with their own leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi. He suggested that the Congress would blame everything from electronic voting machines to the public of Bihar, but never acknowledge any fault on Rahul Gandhi's part. Poonawalla went as far as to accuse the Congress of "insulting" Bihar.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Chidambaram's opinion piece delved into the specifics of the election. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, followed by its ally Janata Dal (United), while the Opposition bloc, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress, suffered a major defeat. Chidambaram pointed out the poverty and unemployment in Bihar and questioned why voters made the choices they did. He urged the people of Bihar to "re-discover the spirit of the Champaran era." He also stated that it was "unfortunate" that Bihar did not vote for a "strong Opposition."

And this is the part most people miss...

Poonawalla's criticism wasn't limited to Chidambaram's article. He also shared a news screenshot where a Trinamool Congress leader suggested a change in the INDIA bloc leadership, expressing a lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi. Poonawalla's argument was that the Congress was becoming a liability for its allies.

This political spat raises several questions: Is it fair to blame voters for the outcome of an election? Should political parties be more introspective after a loss? And what role does leadership play in electoral success or failure?

What do you think? Do you agree with the BJP's criticism of Chidambaram, or do you see merit in his analysis? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
