The Athletics' spring game took a turn for the worse as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, the A's offense struggled from the start. Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, making his first spring start, dominated the A's in the first inning with just four pitches. The A's didn't threaten until the third inning, but their efforts were thwarted when first baseman Nick Kurtz grounded into a double play against the Diamondbacks reliever. The A's managed to score their lone run in the next inning, thanks to Jacob Wilson's sacrifice fly, set up by back-to-back singles from Tyler Soderstrom and Brent Rooker. The A's had a couple of chances to add more runs to the scoreboard later in the game, but they fizzled out. The A's will look to bounce back tomorrow against the Los Angeles Angels, with right-hander Luis Morales making his third appearance and second start. The Angels will counter with right-hander Alek Manoah, who is off to a strong start this spring. A's fans will also get their second look at left-hander Jamie Arnold, who was the team's first-round pick last year. If all goes well and they stay healthy, Morales, Arnold, and fellow pitching prospect Gage Jump could be the top-of-the-rotation arms that can get the A's back to consistent playoff contention.
