In a shocking turn of events, what initially seemed like a tragic case of food poisoning in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh has unfolded into a chilling family conspiracy involving arsenic-laced sweets. The police have successfully unraveled the disturbing details surrounding the deaths of a woman, her grandfather, and an unsuspecting security guard, all of whom fell victim after consuming these tainted treats.
The incident traces back to January 9 when an unattended bag, which contained vegetables and a box of sweets known as pedas, was discovered near the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) office in Junnardeo, Chhindwara. With no one stepping forward to claim the mysterious package, curiosity led to devastating consequences.
The first casualty was Dashru Yaduvanshi, a 50-year-old security guard on duty who sampled the sweets. Shortly thereafter, he experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea and tragically succumbed to his condition on January 11. Initially, without a post-mortem examination, this incident was shrouded in mystery, leading many to consider it a mere misfortune.
But the danger did not end there. The same box of sweets was eventually taken home by the family of a nearby shopkeeper. In a horrifying chain reaction, 22-year-old Khushboo Kathuria and her 72-year-old grandfather, along with other family members, soon fell gravely ill after consuming the sweets. Despite medical efforts, both Khushboo and her grandfather lost their lives, while her mother and sister barely escaped the same fate.
This grim narrative of three deaths linked only by an abandoned box of sweets took a dark twist as the investigation progressed. Authorities discovered that Khushboo had previously accused her in-laws of mistreatment following her marriage in January 2024, which had led to significant embarrassment for them within their community.
In a vengeful act, her father-in-law, Jhadu Kasar, along with her brother-in-law Shubham and sister-in-law Shivani, allegedly devised a sinister plan to eliminate the source of their humiliation. They reportedly laced the pedas with arsenic and intentionally placed the bag near Khushboo's father's shop, fully aware that she or someone from her circle would inevitably consume it.
Forensic tests ultimately revealed the alarming truth: the arsenic levels in the sweets were dangerously high—thousands of times above safe limits, potent enough to result in multiple fatalities. Investigators suspect that the conspirators did not anticipate the unfortunate death of the security guard, viewing him as collateral damage in their scheme to target Khushboo and her family.
Utilizing technical and cyber evidence, law enforcement officials tracked down the suspects. They have confiscated the motorcycle and mobile devices used in the crime. Subsequently, a case has been filed under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), focusing on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. The investigation is still in progress to determine if anyone else was involved or had prior knowledge of this heinous plot.
