AMD & Eviden Power Europe's Exascale Supercomputer: Alice Recoque (2026)

Imagine a supercomputer so powerful it could revolutionize Europe's AI and scientific research, all while being energy-efficient and sovereign. That's exactly what AMD and Eviden are bringing to life with Alice Recoque, France's first and Europe's second Exascale supercomputer. But here's where it gets even more exciting: this isn't just about raw power—it's about tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time, from climate modeling to personalized medicine, with unprecedented efficiency.

News Highlights:

  • Alice Recoque will significantly boost Europe’s capabilities in AI, scientific computing, and research, all while prioritizing energy efficiency and technological sovereignty.
  • Powered by AMD’s next-gen EPYC CPUs and Instinct MI430X GPUs, it will deliver over one exaflop of HPL performance, setting a new benchmark for supercomputing.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and PARIS, Nov. 18, 2025 – In a groundbreaking collaboration, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) and Eviden, the Atos Group’s advanced computing brand, have been selected to build Alice Recoque, a next-generation supercomputer designed to meet the growing demands of high-performance computing (HPC) and AI. Serving as an AI Factory, Alice Recoque will be France’s first and Europe’s second Exascale supercomputer, led by Grand équipement national de calcul intensif (GENCI) and operated by Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA). This project, valued at 544 million euros, is funded by EuroHPC JU, the Digital Europe Programme (DEP), and the Jules Verne Consortium, with participation from France, the Netherlands, and Greece.

But here's where it gets controversial: Can Europe truly achieve technological sovereignty in AI while relying on partnerships with global tech giants like AMD? And this is the part most people miss—how will this supercomputer balance cutting-edge innovation with the urgent need for sustainability?

Dan McNamara, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Compute & Enterprise AI at AMD, emphasized, “Alice Recoque represents a major leap forward for European sovereign AI, blending national ambition, regional collaboration, and AMD’s cutting-edge technologies. Through our partnership with EuroHPC JU, the Jules Verne Consortium, and Eviden, we’re proud to support Europe’s scientific and industrial leadership with a platform designed for scale, efficiency, and discovery.”

Emmanuel Le Roux, Group SVP and Global Head of Advanced Computing and AI at Eviden, added, “Alice Recoque is a pivotal step toward Europe’s digital future, driven by sovereignty, sustainability, and scientific excellence. As a catalyst for breakthroughs in climate modeling, healthcare, advanced materials, and AI innovation, it will empower researchers and industries across Europe. This AI Factory, born from a shared European vision, showcases what we can achieve together. Eviden is fully committed to its success, bringing expertise, collaboration, and a long-term dedication to responsible technological leadership.”

An AI-HPC Factory for Europe’s Grand Challenges

Alice Recoque is designed to address Europe’s most critical societal, scientific, and industrial challenges by integrating large-scale simulations, data analysis, and AI. It covers the entire computing lifecycle, combining state-of-the-art hardware, advanced AI software, and proven use cases to deliver scalable, high-impact solutions. This ambitious project underscores the strong collaboration between Eviden and AMD, with significant investments in both human and technological resources.

The system is powered by AMD’s next-gen EPYC™ CPUs (codenamed “Venice”), Instinct™ MI430X GPUs (engineered for sovereign AI and scientific computing), and AMD FPGAs. These components are interconnected by Eviden’s BXI network solution into its BullSequana XH3500 platform, with DDN storage. This setup will enhance climate modeling, accelerate materials and energy innovation, enable digital twins for personalized medicine, and support next-gen European AI models.

Exascale Performance with a Green Footprint

Comprising 94 racks, Alice Recoque is poised to be one of Europe’s top supercomputers for double-precision HPC workloads. Its exceptional memory performance will enable deeper insights, faster simulations, and more scientific breakthroughs. What sets it apart is its efficiency: with 25% fewer racks and up to 50% better energy efficiency per GPU compared to other Exascale systems, Eviden’s architecture ensures maximum performance at minimal cost and power, aligning with Europe’s green computing goals.

The AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs support advanced AI data types like FP4 and FP8, delivering leadership AI FLOPs. Each GPU features 432 GB of HBM4 memory and 19.6 TB/s of bandwidth, enabling Alice Recoque to achieve unparalleled capacity and throughput per GPU.

Eviden’s integrated hardware and smart software, powered by AMD’s HPC and AI technologies, will deliver leading computing power with improved energy efficiency. Argos, Eviden’s intelligent software, enables real-time monitoring and energy optimization, while its 5th generation Direct Liquid Cooling technology uses warm water to cool 100% of all-in-one rack components, ensuring efficiency and sustainability at scale.
