The CEO of Akamai, Dr. Tom Leighton, has a bold stance on piracy and its impact on the digital world. In a recent interview, he criticized rival companies for their lax attitudes towards piracy, hiding behind the banner of free speech. Dr. Leighton believes that this is a critical issue of intellectual property theft and that equating it to free speech is dangerous and misguided.
"The right to free speech does not grant anyone the liberty to steal and distribute content that does not belong to them," he asserts.
Dr. Leighton further explains that while IP address blocking can be an effective measure against pirate streamers, it is not the only solution. Detecting and preventing piracy requires effort and resources, but ignoring the issue is easier and more profitable for some.
Akamai, according to Dr. Leighton, takes a firm stance against piracy and will always act to curb illegal streams. The company has even experienced an incident where a legitimate client's infrastructure was hijacked for piracy, and they swiftly took action to resolve the issue.
However, Dr. Leighton acknowledges that Akamai cannot tackle piracy alone. He highlights the involvement of entities that profit from piracy, either directly or indirectly, through scams and crimes. This, he believes, necessitates a wider response and a public-private partnership to create an environment where the risks of operating a piracy ring far outweigh the potential rewards.
"This partnership is essential to design a robust deterrence system," he writes.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dr. Leighton also believes that Akamai can make a significant impact in the field of AI, especially at the edge, through its acquisition of Linode. He envisions a future where agentic AI is popular and effective, powered by inferencing infrastructure located physically close to users.
"We're setting up the infrastructure to support this vision," he says, aiming to install it in over 100 cities worldwide.
Akamai's edge inferencing offering will likely utilize CPUs and older GPUs, ensuring energy efficiency and compatibility with their content delivery network's points of presence.
And this is the part most people miss: Dr. Leighton sees this as a validation of Akamai's founding principles - bringing content closer to users, but not to pirates.
